Let'S Talk Law

Get ready, hear and make points promptly

J. Layne Smith

This column completes my job interview with the Trial Advocate Quarterly magazine.

Q. What are some items attorneys can do to make your occupation simpler at hearings? At demo?

A. Read, fully grasp, and observe the policies of method and court orders. Speak with your opponents and get the job done through problems. At hearings, actively listen and make your position rapidly.

I read through everything to get ready for hearings. That incorporates the scenario information and the regulation.

Typically, I am completely ready for a hearing a week forward of time, so do not hold out until the previous minute to file legal memoranda, depositions, and many others. Timeliness is a trait of professionalism, and frequently a lot less is a lot more.

At trial, do not more than-object, and do not make talking objections. Condition your basis, and the choose will check with you for extra if needed.
