Kerala: Church prepares to enforce variations made in Canon Legislation | Kochi News

IDUKKI: The Catholic Church in Kerala will be implementing the improvements made in the prison legislation section of the Vatican’s Code of Canon Regulation which have been authorized by Pope Francis on Tuesday.
The improvements contained in content articles 1395 and 1398 aim to handle the church’s shortcomings in managing allegations and incidents connected to sexual abuse. It acknowledges that not only kids but older people also can be victimized by monks who abuse their authority. The revisions also include laypeople keeping church positions.
The big revisions, carried out just after 14 yrs of study, will be relevant from December 8. They involve provisions to expel priests found responsible of sexual crimes from the Church. They also eliminate considerably of the discretion that authorized bishops and spiritual superiors to dismiss or protect up abuse.
Kerala Catholic Bishops Council spokesperson Fr Jacob Palakkappilly mentioned the regulation will be applicable to all denominations of the Catholic Church in Kerala.
“We hope the new pointers will enable control incidents of sexual abuse inside of the Church in potential,” stated a senior priest belonging to the Syro-Malabar Church.
